Take action on World Head and Neck Cancer Day 2021

Tuesday 27 July is World Head & Neck Cancer Day. With cancers of the oral cavity and oropharynx part of this cancer group, oral health professionals have an important role to play.

During routine appointments, ask patients about tobacco use and alcohol consumption – major risk factors for oral cancer. Start the conversation; personalise and keep it brief; and show support with action. While patients may not take your advice immediately, brief advice works. It can almost double a person’s chance of successfully quitting smoking; and one in eight people will reduce their drinking.
